Your God Is Too Small
Scientists have made some incredible discoveries about the vastness and smallness of the world we live in. While many of their findings are not proven in the laboratory and are therefore uncertain, the majority of them are very reliable. We base these judgements on the predictability of nature.
If it were possible to drive non-stop at 50 mph around the world (24,000 miles), it would take twenty days. And if light could travel around the world it would would take about as long as it takes to snap your fingers (one eighth of a second).
The distance to the moon is 240,000 miles. If it were possible to drive there at 50 mph it would take 200 days. A rocket reaching speeds of 25,000 mph (or seven miles per second) can make it there in four days. It would take light 1.3 seconds to reach the moon from the earth.
Our solar system includes the sun and nine planets, the furthest being Pluto. If man were to fly to Pluto by rocket, it would take seventeen years. Light, on the other hand, would span that distance in 13.7 days.
The nearest visible star to us (apart from our sun) is Alpha Centauri. Averaging speeds that are in excess of our current possibilities (30,000 mph), it would take man 75,000 years to reach Alpha Centauri. Light would take 4.33 years.
Within our galaxy (The Milky Way) there are thousands of solar systems just like ours. Our galaxy is tremendously large. It takes light 100,000 years to get from one side of it to the other. And yet in relation to the rest of the universe, our Milky Way is just a pinhead.
The light from the nearest galaxy (Andromeda) that we see today would have taken over 2,000,000 years to reach us. Andromeda is similar in size and shape to the Milky Way. There are thousands of solar systems within its boudaries. It's size is incredible, but the shocker is this: Astronomers estimate that there are one million galaxies like Andromeda and the Milky Way withinn the cup of the Big Dipper.
The size of the universe can not be grasped. We, as humans, can not comprehend such magnitude. Perhaps that's why the Bible gives the simple explanation of 'In the beginnig, God created the heavens and earth'. That is an astounding statement! Do we really realsie what that means. God created everything - from minute atoms to the vastness of space.
Some people look at the universe large and small and say, 'How could a God create all this?'. As Christians, our response should be, 'If your idea of God is that small, then He's not worth being called God'. Our reaction to creation should be awe and admiration for the Creator. A beauty of the scheme of things is that God knows how finite we are, yet he cares about each one of us.
There was a man who llived on earth about 2000 years ago. His name was Jesus Christ and he claimed to be God. The Bible says, 'Before anything else existed, there was Christ, with God. He has always been alive and is himself God. He created everything there is - nothing exists that he did not make' (John 1 - 1-23).
Jesus is God. He created everything that exists. Of course as a man, Jesus was limited in time; but imagine the God of the universe takin on the form of man because he cares for us so much.
