The Lord is MY Shepherd
A missionary was touring an Indian reservation where he met a young boy, tending sheep. He thought the boy looked a little young for so much responsibility, so he stopped to talk to him. The boy explained that his father had died and left just him and his mother with responsibility for their sheep. The missionary took a few minutes to explain to the little shepherd about the Great Shepherd, Jesus - and how he could know Jesus as his Savior. The boy trusted Jesus that day. And as he was leaving, the missionary asked could he teach the boy a Bible verse. The boy said he wouldn't be able to remember it. But the missionary taught him 5 words from the Bible - and a way to remember them.
"The Lord is my Shepherd." He told the boy to use the 5 fingers of his left hand to remember those 5 words - and when he got to the 4th word, to take his right hand and wrap it around his fourth finger tightly. "The Lord is MY Shepherd."
About a year later, the missionary returned to that area - but this time whe he visited the hut where the little boy lived, he only saw the boy's mother. When he asked about her son, she said, "Last winter he was out tending the sheep, and a sudden blizzard caught him by surprise. He never made it back. It took the searchers 2 days to find him - they found him under the snow, frozen to death"
And then, through her tears, she told him that when they found the little shepherd boy, they found him with his right hand wrapped tightly around the fourth finger of his left hand.
"The Lord is MY shepherd."
Is He yours? Do you want Him to be? Would you tell Him that right now?
It's possible that you know about Jesus, that you believe in Jesus, that you go to His meetings, maybe you even do things for Jesus. But somehow, you've never made Him yours. You've never made The Shepherd your Shepherd. You've never made the Saviour your Saviour.
The difference is two little words found in Galatians 2:20. "I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me." You stand at that cross that you may have known about all your life. You look up at the price the Son of God is paying there. And you say with your heart, "For ME. He's dying there For ME. It's my sin He's paying for on that cross." And then you say, again with all your heart, "Jesus, I'm Yours."
If you don't know you've done that, you probably haven't. And you need to. Having Jesus in your head will never get you to heaven. He has to be in your heart. This can be your day to finally move Him from your head to your heart - so you don't miss heaven by those 18 inches.
Right now, talk to Jesus - maybe in words something like this: "Lord, I've been running my own life. I resign. I believe that when You died on that cross, You were paying for every one of my sins. And now I'm giving You what You paid for with Your life - I'm giving You me."
This could be the day you look at Jesus and finally say, "This time, He's MINE. The Lord is MY Shepherd".
