More than half of the works of art in the museum's collection were created on paper which can be a refined and striking medium but is particularly susceptible to damage and the effects of ageing. Over the years, many of these works were carefully removed from old, acidic mounts and frames to halt further deterioration.
In a significant conservation programme undertaken last year, fifty of the most fragile works on paper were meticulously cleaned, treated for damage, and reframed using archival materials designed to preserve them for the future.
For this exhibition twenty-four of these newly conserved works were selected, many of which have not been seen by the public in decades, and some that, until now, were too fragile to display at all.
