Going Places
This exhibition showcases journeys through life from marriage to a love of plants and puzzles bringing together communities from different backgrounds.
Background
Going places is an Art Fund led project funded by The National Heritage Lottery Fund due to be delivered in 2025-2029. It is aimed at supporting and enabling networks of museums to collaborate with underrepresented communities to be involved in shaping exhibition themes and outreach programming. In turn museum collections will be shared with audiences in meaningful ways, enabling objects and artworks to travel and new stories to be told.
The journey so far...…
As part of the Going Places project, we delivered a 6-week artist-led programme with artist Órlaith Cullinane. We reached out to communities not represented in the Museum collection to become involved in a pilot project. They were tasked with exploring the Museum’s collection to produce works inspired by them that would reflect their journey through life.
Having explored the Museum galleries, they discovered there were lots of different types of vessels on display. This led them to use the idea of vessels as inspiration for their creative piece, not only could they be considered a place to store things from food to precious jewels but could also be used to reflect a journey.
Every object in the museum is considered valuable regardless of what it is. From the stories it is associated with, the people who owned and used them to the object itself. The group were encouraged to explore this idea and to think about what could be stored in vessels that hold value to them in their journey.
Each participant then brought objects they considered valuable to them which were used to create a series of ink prints. These prints were then used to create the papier-mâché boats on display which reflect the different journeys of each participant. They were also captured on camera by our social engaged photographer, Agata Banc and these too are on display.
The future...…
We hope this project will receive full funding from The National Heritage Lottery Fund so we can continue this journey. It will help to encourage underrepresented audiences to become part of Museum life whose stories will be reflected in the Museum’s collection for future generations to explore.
