High Days and Holidays
An exhibition derived from the Museum’s collection and in association with Libraries NI showcasing travel in Northern Ireland.
Nowadays the seaside is a short convenient drive from anywhere in Northern Ireland but in the past it was not as easy to get away from it all for a holiday. In fact it wasn’t always a pleasurable experience… the word ‘travel’ is an off shoot of travail, meaning ‘trouble’ or ‘torment’. Both are descendants of the Latin ‘trepalium’, which was an instrument of torture!
This exhibition looks at how travelling for pleasure has changed and evolved over the centuries.
